The curriculum at LLL Preschool presents an integrated, process oriented, thematic approach with the incorporation of children’s literature. Activities are based on weekly themes which combine language, math, science, music and art related experiences.  There are many learning opportunities and open ended activities for the children throughout the day as they visit various areas in the classroom.  Teachers plan activities in the learning centers with a focus on the theme, so that the experiences and learning in one area reinforce and support learning in another area. The emphasis on children’s literature in the curriculum acknowledges the importance of books in the lives of children and the role of reading aloud to children in literacy development. We encourage children to be thinkers and learners by supporting them in their curiosity, discover and joy in the process of learning about the world around them.

Our preschool class is designed to offer a nurturing and supportive environment where children begin their educational journey.  Social growth is very important in this class.  Children first learn to separate from their families and trust their teachers while learning to play.  As the children move from parallel to more cooperative play, we see the joy they have in budding friendships, the laughter they share and the development of rich imaginations.  With teacher support, children learn to solve their problems and we help them find the words to use when conflicts occur.  We believe that children gain confidence by being able to do things themselves so we nurture and support them with age appropriate self help skills such as putting on their hats and coats.  We create a careful balance of individual, small group and large group activities throughout the day that fosters social skills and confidence in the classroom setting.  We work together with families when the children show signs of readiness with toilet training.

According to our Pre-K friends “we do a lot of fun stuff like reading books, playing with our friends and learning about dinosaurs and other cool things”.  Children learn about friendships, master self help skills, strengthen literacy and number foundations, solve problems, develop a sense of themselves as community members and explore the world around them-all while having fun.

Through games, circle time, free choice time, art projects, outdoor play and our many specialists, children develop social, emotional, language, gross and fine motor skills.  We build on the children’s skills and challenge each child to go further.  To promote social and emotional growth, we focus on helping children see the importance of individual abilities and choices as well as their roles in the group.  Developing friendships, sustaining play, learning social problem solving skills, communicating feelings and understanding the feelings of others are some of the goals in our class.  Helping a friend who falls, wondering how the stars got in the sky, observing a caterpillar turn into a butterfly, recognizing letters in the names of friends…the list is endless and we want the children to have the excitement that comes with developing knowledge, consideration and understanding.  We believe in the importance of nourishing a love of learning and ensuring that each child receives the best preparation for kindergarten and beyond.

Steve the Science Guy visits us seasonally and teaches us all about science in a fun, entertaining and educational way.  He does a Magic Show in June during our June Bugs program.  We also have a farm visit in October with animals for the children to pet and a pony ride for them.
